Joana Espadinha
She is one of Portugal’s leading pop singers and one of the most important composers of her generation. After completing her law degree at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, she focussed her attention entirely on her lifelong love: music, and jazz in particular. First at the Hot Clube. Then at the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam to study Jazz. In parallel with her academic activity, teaching singing at the Luiz Villas Boas Jazz School and on the Jazz course at the University of Évora, she gave her first performances as a guest composer for names such as Afonso Pais, João Hasselberg, André Santos, and João Firmino. In 2014, she gave the go-ahead for her first album, ‘Avesso’. Four years later, in 2018, she made her mark in the pop world with ‘O Material Tem Sempre Razão’. She also made a name for herself in writing, with invitations from Carminho, Cláudia Pascoal, Sara Correia, and Luís Trigacheiro. In 2021 he released ‘Ninguém Vai Tirar Nos O Sol’ and in May this year her third album ‘Vergonha na cara’.
